The Red Mohair Knit

I recently learnt of the word ‘autumnal’.  Ask me why it took nearly 28 years to discover this and be met with a dumbstruck shrug. Here I am representing my native American-English to Belgians, and all I can say to describe a whiskey cocktail with bitters, cinnamon and clove smoke is “OMG it’s so Fall!”… Autumnal. Autumnal…. I should have read more as a child [bangs palm to forehead].

Of course Autumn is the only season that gets such a regal adjective.  It’s rich. It’s vibrant. It’s velvety. It’s passionate. It’s Autumnal.  The crisp air and lowering temperatures call for cosy layers. Or whatever it takes to get you through these darkening days, amiright. This past weekend, I was rather desperate to update my neglected wardrobe (oh, you couldn’t tell from the 6 missing months of posts that I haven’t had a single fruitful day of shopping!? The shame.. Indescribable…). So I popped into the WEEKDAY on the Kammenstraat, a new brand from H&M heralded as “the Swedish Invasion” offering modern and understated streetwear, and boom just like that, the drought ended.

THE UTILITY:

Truth be told, I know a red knitted sweater is something totally basic, and probably everyone and their grandma already wears one.  But in the off-chance that you’re like me, and have a difficult time reconciling bright colors with basic pieces (I mean hello, they’re called “Basics” for a reason right?), this purchase took a shocking decision time of 5 minutes. Bing – wool knit on. Bang – 5 outfits spinning through the brain like a rolodex. Boom – swipe of the card.

This piece stays on trend with wide raglan sleeves, ribbed patterns, and dimensional intersecting lines cutting across the front.  I also love the way the neckline leaves enough room to peek a turtleneck through without overcrowding the area. So chic, so perfect. The bright rich color bursts life into the work wardrobe, disrupting the familiar & routine monotone choices we lean on.  Ahem – I’m typing to all of you..  Btw what also might be familiar in my professional & leisure looks are the grey rollneck from this post, and my Levi’s 501 from this. As the phrase goes: Reduce [the wardrobe], Reuse [staple pieces], and Recycle [with creativity].

And finally, a quick refresh on how to care for mohair/wool:  wash on low heat, slow spin, reshape damp, and lay flat to dry.  I’ll wait while you repeat that.  Now check out this brand, go crazy on it’s aesthetic, and GET AUTUMNAL LADIES!
